Practice Areas are used to categorize matters by type or area of focus for better searching, filtering, and reporting. For example, adding an "Employment" Practice Area can be used to categorize all matters related to employment law and similar areas. Practice Areas can be associated with various records, including invoices, matters, and vendors.

Practice Areas List Page
Go to Settings > Practice Areas to view, manage, or add Practice Areas. By default, all Practice Areas are displayed. Use the tabs above the list to quickly filter the list to show only active or inactive Practice Areas..
The following default columns of information are listed for each Practice Area:
- Name: Click on the hyperlinked name to view additional details about the Practice Area.
- Description: Additional context or notes, if provided.
- Cost Code: Cost Code associated with the Practice Area, if applicable.
- ID: System-generated ID assigned when the Practice Area was created.
- Related Matters: Click on the hyperlinked number to see a filtered list of the matters currently associated with the Practice Area.
- Actions: Click on the ... (more) option to edit specific fields (e.g., description) or delete the Practice Area.
You can re-sort the list in ascending or descending order by clicking on any column name. By default, the list is sorted by name in ascending order.
Adding a Practice Area
1. Click +Add Practice Areas in the top-right corner.
2. Fill in the requested information and click Save (a name is required at a minimum to continue with saving). To fill in or update other details (e.g., description, cost code, etc.), skip below.
Practice Area Details
1. Click on the name from the Practice Areas page.
2. Hover over the value for a field under Attributes and click the edit icon to make a change (see the table below for descriptions of each field).
3. Click outside the field or press enter/return on your keyboard to save your changes.
Field Name | Description |

Name (required) | Name as it will appear in list of values on records where a Practice Area can be assigned (e.g., matters, vendors, invoices, etc.). |
Description | Enter or edit a brief description of up to 250 characters, including spaces, to provide context and other information notes for other users. |
ID (read-only) | System-generated ID dassigned when the Practice Area was created. |
Cost Code | Select a Cost Code from the list of values, if applicable. |
Lead | Designating a lead automatically assigns the user as the first reviewer on invoices associated with the Practice Area. This automatically adds the user to any active invoice review rules for Practice Area Approvers. |
Practice Area Actions
From the Settings > Practice Areas page, you can edit/delete individual Practice Areas or apply bulk actions.
Click the ... (more) option under the Actions column and select one of the following: Edit or Delete. Skip to the section below for more information related to deleting Practice Areas.
Selecting Edit will open a window with options to edit the following fields: Name, Description, Cost Code, and Lead. Click Save.
Select boxes for Practice Areas on the left side of the table and then click Bulk Actions. You can apply the following bulk actions: Activate, Edit, Inactivate, or Delete.
Choosing Edit will allow you to modify values for the following fields across the selected Practice Areas: Description and Lead.
Before deleting a Practice Area, you must update the Practice Area for impacted matters. Alternatively, you can deactivate the Practice Area so that it is no longer assignable moving forward.
1. Go to Matters from the left-side navigation bar and filter the list by the relevant Practice Area(s).
2. Select boxes for the impacted matters on the left and then click Bulk Actions > Edit.
3. Select the replacement Practice Area and click Update.
If you need to update individual matters, click the ... (more) option under the Actions column from the matters list and choose Select Practice Area.
